The Scientific and Cultural Website of Shia belief
The term “Shia” literally means follower or adherent. In Islamic terminology, it refers to those Muslims who believe that, by divine command, the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him and his family) appointed Imam Ali (peace be upon him) as his immediate successor. Shia Islam is one of the two major denominations of Islam, and the global Shia population is estimated to be over 200 million people. The Shia school of thought has three main sects: Twelver Shia (Imamiyyah), Isma’ili Shia, and Zaydi Shia. The Twelver Shia, who believe in the succession of twelve Imams, constitute the largest segment of the Shia population. They believe in the Imamate of twelve Imams, the last of whom is the Awaited Mahdi (may God hasten his reappearance).
The Aalulbayt (peace be upon them) Global Information Center, affiliated with the office of His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani (may his authority be prolonged), and under the supervision of Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimin Hajj Sayyid Javad al-Shahristani (may his blessings continue), launched the “The al-Shia Scientific, Cultural, and Doctrinal Website” in the year 1998 (1377 SH), offering content in several living languages of the world.
