Since the start of the conflict in Sudan, thousands of people have been injured and hundreds of people have died as a result of the fighting in Sudan. The streets of the capital Khartoum have been turned into battle zones while the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in weeks-long conflict.

Consequently, refugees have flocked to neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Chad, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. According to Saltmarsh, Egypt has received the largest number of Sudanese refugees than any other country, around 110,000 since the start of the conflict.

Matthew Saltmarsh, the spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) told a Geneva briefing on Friday, May 19, 2023, that the latest figure of the refugees includes some 843,000 people displaced internally and around 250,000 people who have fled across Sudan’s borders.
