Imam Hussain Pilgrimage in Traditions Viewpoint 1

Based on many traditions narrated from the Holy Prophet and the Infallible Imams, one of their orders to their followers (Shias) is to memorize forty traditions. For instance, the Holy Prophet has said:

Those people from amongst my Ummah, who memorize forty traditions pertaining to those issues of religion, which they are in need of, Allah shall resurrect them on the Day of Judgment as jurisprudents and scholars.(1)

It is clear that most of those who memorize forty hadiths, try to act and practice in accordance with those traditions. Therefore, it is true to say that, the reasons of this order to the people might be the followings:

  1. To memorize forty hadiths from the infallibles,
  2. To think of the traditions and practice based on them,
  3. To teach other people the true rules of life and practice Infallible Imams' lifestyles.

It is important to mention that the infallible Imams not only ordered people but also commanded Muslim scholars (their prominent students and companions) to memorize forty traditions. So, in addition to the above benefits, there are other benefits including:

  1. Preventing from elimination of traditions. Based on the history, there was a movement which started by the first caliph Abubakr to prohibit reading and teaching the Prophet traditions. The movement started from the age of first caliph till the government of Omar ibn Abd al-Aziz. It is obvious that traditions were being eliminated and forgotten gradually. Therefore, one of the most important reasons to order the Shia population to save forty hadiths is to saving the traditions.
  2. The infallible Imams were trying to introduce people the real Islamic teachings. Therefore, encouraging people to memorize forty hadiths was one of the ways to introduce true Islam.

Based on above-mentioned reasons and benefits, the infallible Prophet and Imams ordered their followers for many times to memorize forty hadiths. The present article (and next articles) seek to discuss a number of authentic hadiths about Imam Hossein's pilgrimage and to show that the pilgrimage of Imam Hussein was valuable and worthy in Islam, and how much the Imams ordered it.

The First Hadith: Paradise and Safety on the Day of Resurrection, the Reward of tears for Imam Hussain

Imam Sajjad (a.s.) said: Any believer who weeps over Imam Husain (a.s.) with a single tear will be rewarded by Allah for it; he will be made to dwell in rooms in Paradise for long ages. Any believer who cries over us with even a single tear; because of his grief over the way in which our enemies hurt us in this life, will be rewarded by Allah for it; he will be made to dwell in good settlements in Paradise. And any believer, who cries with a single tear, because of his suffering from the pain of being hurt in our way, will be kept away from the difficulties of Judgment Day by Allah and will be safe from Allah’s wrath and Hellfire.(2)

The Second Hadith: Reward of the Angels' Prayers Gifted to the Pilgrimage of Imam Hussein (AS)

Imam Jafar Sadiq (asws) said: “Allah has dedicated an angel known as Mansoor along with four thousand other angels, who mourn over Imam Hussain (asws). They pray for and seek the forgiveness of those who perform His Ziarat.”(3)

The Third Hadith: Thousands Rak'ats of the Thousand Angels' Prayers as the Gift to the Pilgrim of Imam Hussein

Imam Sadiq (a.s) said: Allah has appointed seventy thousand angels to the grave of Imam Husain (a.s) who are disheveled and covered with dust to cry over him until Judgment Day. They pray at his grave and each of their prayers equal a thousand prayers of human beings and the rewards of their prayers is for one who performs the Ziyarat of Imam Husain (a.s).(4)

The Forth Hadith: Annually Pilgrimage of Imam Hussein and Services of Angels to Pilgrims

Muhammad ibn Marwan narrates: I heard Imam Jafar Sadiq (asws) say: “Perform the Ziarat of Hussain (asws) as often as possible, even if it is only once a year. Those who perform His Ziarat while believing in His rights and without denying His station will have no reward other than Jannah. They will receive great sustenance and Allah will provide them with immediate relief. Allah has dedicated four thousand angels to mourn at the grave of Hussain (asws) ibn Ali (asws). They accompany everyone who performs the Ziarat of Hussain (asws) as they return back to their families. If the pilgrims become ill, these angels will visit him. When the pilgrims die, these angels attend their funerals while seeking forgiveness for them and asking Allah to show mercy upon them.”(5)

The Fifth Hadith: The angels welcome pilgrims of the grave of Imam Hussein (AS).

Imam Baqir (a.s) said: Four thousand disheveled angels, covered with dust cry over Imam Husain (a.s) until Judgment Day. No one who comes to his Ziyarat but that they welcome him. No visitor of Imam Husain (a.s) becomes ill, but that they visit them and none of them dies, but that they are present near him.

The Sixth Hadith: Why do not you go to visit the grave of Imam Hussein?

Imam Jafar Sadiq (asws) said: “What is wrong with you that you do not go to Him (perform the Ziarat of Imam Hussain asws)?! There are four thousand angels who weep by His grave and will do so until the Day of Judgment.”(7)

The Seventh Hadith: Pilgrims of Imam Hussein, Siddiqan of the Ummah of the Prophet

Imam Baqir (a.s) said: Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w.s) would hug Imam Husain (a.s) whenever he came to him. Then he would tell Amirul Momineen (Imam Ali) (a.s) to take care of him after which he would kiss him and weep. Imam Husain (a.s) asked, “Father, why are you crying?” “I am kissing parts of your body which will be struck with swords and weeping,” the Prophet replied. “Father, will I be killed?” Husain (a.s) asked. “Yes by Allah; you, your father and your

brother will all be slain,” the Prophet replied. “Would our tombs be far from each other?” Imam Husain (a.s) asked. “Yes my son,” the Prophet replied. “So who from your Ummah will come for our Ziyarat?” Imam Husain (a.s) asked. “None but the truthful ones will come to my Ziyarat, and the Ziyarat of your father, your brother and you,” the Prophet replied.(8)

The Eight Hadith: Avoidance of the fire of hell a reward for the pure love of Imam Hassan and Imam Hussein

Abu Zarr al-Ghaffari narrates: I saw Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w.s.) kissed Hassan and Husain (a.s.) and said: Fire will not touch the face of one who is sincere in his love for Hassan and Husain (a.s.) and their progeny, even if his sins equal the grains of sand, unless he has committed a sin that expels him from faith.(9)

The Ninth Hadith: Pilgrimage of the Imams, Getting Rid of the Fear and Panic of Resurrection

The Prophet of Allah (PBUH&HP) said to Ali (PBUH): O`Ali! I guarantee those who come to pilgrim me during My lifetime or after my death and those who pilgrim you during Your life or after Your death or those who pilgrim your two sons (asws) either during their lives or after their death, I will save them from the terrors and difficulties of the Day of Judgment and that I will raise them alongside Me.”(10)

The Tenth Hadith: Laughing Eyes

The Holy Prophet (S) said: O' Fatimah! Every eye shall be weeping on the Day of Judgment except the eye which has shed tears over the tragedy of Husayn (A.S.) for surely, that eye shall be laughing and shall be given the glad tidings of the bounties and comforts of Paradise.(11)
